| The ORB mark |
| Tartan became truly famous in the nineteenth century, when in 1843 Lady Dunmore produced the Murray tartan in Harris Tweed cloth. She instigated trade with the aristocratic market, popularising both Tweed and tartan, so that the Harris Tweed Association took the world-famous ORB symbol from the Earl of Dunmore's coat-of-arms. The symbol consists of the orb surmounted by a Maltese Cross with the words "Harris Tweed" subjoined. The Association began stamping the trade mark in 1911 and it is the oldest British trade mark in continual use. |

In 1917, Lord Leverhulme purchased the Isle of Lewis from the Mathesons. He spent millions on developing the island's economy and the Tweed industry. Island soldiers returning from the Great War reclaimed their land, and to this day, the same family crofts remain, on which the Tweed was orginally produced. |
True Harris Tweed must be made from 100% pure virgin wool, spun, dyed and finished in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland and woven by the islanders in their own homes or outbuildings.
